Affairs have a strange effect on the people they touch. It is almost uncanny how an affair can change so many things. I use the term “Affair Magic” because like a magic act, so many things change. The meanings of sex, intimacy and trust are suddenly changed. Communication and non-verbal messages change. It is true that affairs transform everything, it is also true that everything now becomes either ugly or cheap. The remedies to all these changes are painful and expensive.

Once the magic of affairs touch a person’s life, they never go back to looking at the world or their spouse the same again. Infidelity can be overcome although it requires effort.  Affairs are magical, although in an ugly hideous black magic kind of way. It takes what was once innocent and turns it into something grotesque. Even the paramour turns into something ugly. All the hopes of “something better” are transformed into something one is just trying to survive.

With the holidays, the allure of affairs is often a danger. One way to avoid being caught in the allure is to recognize the ugly aspects of the magic of affairs.
