So you can’t talk about emotions?

If you are one of those who feel uncomfortable talking about emotions, take hope. Even if you grew up in a dysfunctional home or one where emotions were not discussed, you can still make changes. In terms of what you can do, the answer is to read poetry. Many poets work at finding the right words to express their feelings. I am not encouraging you to write poetry, in many cases, it could backfire. What I am encouraging you to do is to read poetry. When reading it, notice what emotions it communicates. Notice how it makes you feel. Notice the words and phrases the author uses to express themselves. After reading it, think about how you can better express yourself, along with what your spouse is expressing to you. Learn how to put emotions in your own words. With some time and practice, you can learn to express your emotions more effectively and without taking forever to do it. Good poetry is short and succinct. Learning to express yourself will involve finding the right word and the most effective way of expressing it. Some couples spend hours trying to communicate emotions and issues that could have been communicated in a short period.

Reading poetry is also a way to help you with your own emotional recovery. When you see how others express what you have struggled with, it puts words to your experiences.
