Affairs can cost you!

Affairs can cost you, even if you are not the one having the affair. Roger Schuler, a blogger in Alabama has found himself in jail for daring to report on the affair of a local political heavy  and a female lobbyist. Since the family of the accused cheater has pull, they did not want even the allegations to be made public. The pressure included intimidation from Judge Claud Neilson of Demopolis, Alabama. The judge was called in from retirement to preside over the case.  The judge has insisted that the court records of the incident be sealed and that all stories the blogger wrote about the affair be scrubbed from the internet.  Even when the ACLU filed a friend of the court brief, the judge considered it confidential.

When judges make it confidential, it leaves me feeling uneasy. If there is no evidence of wrong doing, then why the secrecy? It seems to me that a judge would want to clear the air.  If nothing happened, it seems like an open discussing in the court record would clear matters up and publicly clear the official of any false accusations.

Although the media has not covered this case, the ramifications are significant, even for you. When you are involved in an affair, especially with those people with political pull, the risks are high. You may not be the one having the affair. It could be your spouse. When you are in such situations, you may not be able to count on the courts or law enforcement for help, or to get the truth out. When cheater have political juice, they often do not play fair. Even if you are not the one having the affair, just talking about it can be potentially dangerous. In this case, Roger is now in jail for writing about the alleged affair. Some cheaters do not want the truth coming out about their actions and are willing to go to extremes in order to achieve their goals.

Some cheaters may espouse one set of values and live by another. In this case, the alleged cheater publicly opposed many of the actions that he reportedly engaged in with the mistress. This is not unusual. Cheaters often behave one set of morals while verbalizing another one.  They often go from one extreme to another. This is part of the double-mindedness that often happens with cheaters.
