When your spouse lies to you, it’s disheartening. You want to believe them, yet when all they give you are smooth sounding lies, a discouragement sets in.
You want to believe what they tell you, yet your own gut tells you that what’s coming out of their mouths is a lie.
During times like this, you learn to trust your gut. Although your spouse lets you down, your gut doesn’t.
There are many nerves in your gut that actually perform rudimentary thinking. Your gut really does tell you things.
Even though you often ignored it, your gut hasn’t let you down. Perhaps this time, you will listen more consistently to it. You learn that your heart tricks you at times.
It wants to believe your spouse. It wants to believe the lies. At times it even likes what it hears.
Although your heart wants to believe, you learned the hard way that your heart is not always your best friend.
The lies are frustrating.
They create a wall separating you and your spouse that doesn’t need to be there. The lies keep the two of you apart.
The twisted logic of “I am only trying to protect you from hurt” doesn’t make up for the disappointment.
You learn that you can’t trust your spouse. That distrust spreads to other areas as well. You start to question your boss, the ‘experts’, your pastor, what you read, your friends, just about everyone.
When the distrust continues, you distrust on a larger scale. You distrust the church, the government, your sense of reality.
Cheaters and liars don’t realize the true scope of damage that they do with their so-called ‘little lies’. To them they are little lies, to you, it’s a HUGE disappointment. They are oblivious to how they are planting seeds of you distrusting others as well.
Sailors learn ways of navigating through fog, pilots learn ways of navigating through storms and you can learn to navigate through the lies. Experience is a harsh but a good teacher. You also learn how precious truth really is, even in small things.
