What Does the Bible say about Adultery

A reader wanted to know “What does the Bible say about adultery?“. The Bible has plenty to say about adultery.  The simple message is “Don’t do it!”

Besides one of the ten commandments speaking against it, there are also several stories illustrating the negative consequences of adultery.

There are also passages defining what it (adultery) is. Given that mankind often likes finding loopholes and weasel their way out of things, it was important to define what adultery is.  Parts of the Old Testament lay out specifically what constitutes ‘adultery’.

Some of  having to define terms comes from an awareness of the nature of mankind and how they like sneaking around things.

There are also many passages dealing with warnings about adultery, what the consequences are, and the tell tale signs associated with adultery. Some people need object lessons since many people need deeper instruction than plain instruction.

Some of you may need biographical stories illustrating truths about adultery. There are many episodes involving adultery from various perspectives.

With David and Bathsheba, you have a king committing adultery, with the sons of Eli, you have priests committing adultery and with the golden calf episode, you have a large orgy-type situation.

Besides adultery, you have episodes dealing with adultery related topics. With Abraham and Isaac, you have husbands lying about their relationship with their wives. With Samson, you have a father interfering in their child’s wedding.

With Rahab, a hooker leaves her profession to become a respectable mother.

These accounts address the issues leading up to the adultery, how the adultery happened and then how it was dealt with. Yes, this includes accounts of those who recovered from affairs as well.

Although affairs are discouraged, they were not the end of the marriages. Such accounts, like Hosea, along with Jesus and the woman taken in adultery address the needs of those who are recovering from what happened.

Those accounts illustrate that adultery can be overcome. By using real-life stories, you have vivid illustrations of how adultery can be handled.

So whether you are one of those who learns from instruction, object lessons or life stories, there are ample examples of each, so you can learn from the lives of others both in terms of what to do and what not to do.

I have dealt with the question “What Does the Bible Say About Adultery” in greater depth and detail in the e-book, “What does the Bible say about adultery?” on the subject. It includes how various adulterous situations were handled and lessons derived from them.
