With workplace accusations, you’re being singled out. You’re being cut out from the herd for some reason. When the rumors have the power of the group behind them, they are a powerful force.

Many times, the damage done stains your reputation, even when you have done nothing wrong.

Because they can be so destructive, accusations of an affair in the workplace are something that you can not easily ignore. The herd or mob mentality is a powerful force, that gets worse when they are ignored.

When the workplace is highly stratified, such as in the military, where there are clearly defines lines between position and rank that limits your accessibility to the source. You may or many not be able to find the source or be able to intervene. The stratification of the workplace is often a factor you have to consider.

With professional accusers, they know that the odds are in their favor. You’ll be in a position of having to disprove the accusation.

The politician LBJ (Lyndon Baines Johnson) masterfully used this tactic in destroying his enemies. Once he had an aid accuse his rival of having relations with pigs and leaking it to the press. Although the accusation was false, the rival faced the discomfort of denying and disproving the wild accusation.

The more vehemently you deny an affair, the worse it starts looking.

In many cases, unless you have a sterling reputation, they believe the odds are in their favor that you did have an affair.  Like the gambler they are, they know that the odds are in their favor, and they are looking for a payday.

For them, you are another potential payday, even in situations where they are bought off (e.g. the matter settles before going to court) to prevent matters from going to court and embarrassing you.

The professional accuser often uses similar strategies to other false accusers such as false accusations of child abuse and false accusations of sexual harassment.

When they are used to making false accusations for profit, it is no big deal for them to accuse a co-worker or boss of an affair. They may even view the accusations as a way of removing you from competing with them in the workplace.
