Burning Man and Affairs

With each annual occurrence of Burning Man, questions arise about the connection of Burning Man and affairs. Let me start off stating that “I have never been to Burning Man, nor plan to attend. My experience is limited to what I have read and talking with those who have been.

The Burning Man event temporarily suspends all rules, including relationship rules. Immediacy and Self-Expression are emphasized. When it comes to relationships, the values of immediacy and self-expression can be detrimental if you value loyalty and commitment.

I sometimes wonder if Burning Man should instead be labelled as ‘Burning Passions’.

Burning Man tests relationships in terms of “what do you really value”. In the free for all atmosphere, you’ll discover what your true values are. You say that you’re committed to one person, yet when an attractive person comes on to you wishing to express themselves sexually, will you turn them down?

It’s a case of “What are you really like when no one else is around?” Attending Burning Man is a way of testing that question. Although there are people around, the mindset and atmosphere is one of “what happens here, stays here”. With that mindset, few people are going to be judging you about what you did, other than yourself.

With that kind of atmosphere, you’ll discover whether or not you really are loyal. You’ll discover whether you are truly committed to that one man or one woman.

If you ever wondered if your spouse will cheat, a visit to Burning Man will answer that for you, whether you wanted to really know or not.

Burning Man will test your values in a major way. It’s not a judgemental type of test. Instead it’s ‘do what you want to do’ type of test. The risk of an affair at Burning Man is high. Even polyamorists have noted the risk of activity at Burning Man.

What is clear is that attending Burning Man will test you and your relationships. You’ll discover how honest you are with yourself and your own values. You’ll discover the link between Burning Man and affairs in terms of how easy or difficult that would be for you. Burning Man will test your ‘true’ values in terms of would you have an affair if the opportunity was there?

Although Burning Man and ‘Burners’ are part of an experiential event, they will come back to the real world and reality. They will eventually have to come back to responsibilities and commitments. They will eventually have to face the consequences of what they did at the event.

The experience of ‘do what you want’ is not the way the real world operates. They will have to choose which set of values they wish to live under, whether the one of commitment in a one man, one woman committed marriage relationship or the one of do whatever pleases you and immediate expressions of affection (e.g. impulsiveness) with no regard of consequences.

Burning Man will force them to decide who they really are and which values they cherish.

Best Regards,

Jeff
