One of the scary moments in Formula 1 racing is when a driver’s vehicle begins spinning out of control. At that moment, the laws of physics take over and the driver’s attempts at controlling the situation are futile at best.
When your car or your life is spinning out of control, it’s a scary feeling. At that moment the normal rules of the routing no longer apply. Finding someone or something to blame is pointless when you’re spinning out of control.
When things are spinning, not only are you out of control, all your reference points are useless. You can’t even tell which direction you’re headed in. The loss of direction brings disorientation. You can’t be sure where you’re going.
The metaphor of a formula 1 car spinning out of control and your life spinning out of control at news of the affair are so similar, it’s scary.
When your life is spinning out, what are your going to do?
If there is a lesson you can learn from racing, it’s “Don’t look at the wall!” When your car is spinning out of control, your reflexes will begin directing and steering things in a way your conscious mind can’t do. While in that state, your car begins heading for what your focusing on.
If you focus or look at the wall, you’ll hit the wall. Likewise, when your marriage and life are spinning out, don’t look at the wall of divorce. If you aim for the wall, you’ll hit it. The more you look at it, talk about it, and consider it, the more your unconcious mind steers in that direction. Your mind will direct your life toward what you’re aiming for or looking at.
When your life is spinning out of control, it’s also not the time for figuring out the who, what and why of the affair. The time for that is later, once you are back in control, not when spinning out of control.
