Old Dictionaries and Emotional Affairs

When it comes to foreign languages, my knowledge of other languages is limited. Even after three years of Spanish and two years of German, along with a smattering of Italian, Latin and French, I have not mastered any of them to the point of fluency.

One language I am fluent in is psycho-babble. I actually understand much of the jargon used in the counseling field. At times, the jargon helps with accuracy and precision of phenomena, yet at times it confuses outsiders.

One area where there’s been confusion is with the term ’emotional affair’. In using this label, it makes this type of relationship sound less serious than an affair. It makes the emotional affair sound like a ‘minor affair’ of the heart. Since there was no coitus, the assumption is made that no damage was done.

The confusion about emotional affairs is one of the casualties of language wars. In previous generations, the term ‘infidelity’ was used. It covered not only adultery, but also included deceit, losing faith or the lack of faith in your spouse.

When you called someone out on their infidelity, it covered a wide range actions. The old dictionaries laid it out in simple terms. There was no specificity of emotional affairs versus physical affairs. It also covered when you don’t trust your spouse like you used to.

This means that using the older definition of ‘infidelity’ that emotional affairs are every bit as serious as adultery. Losing faith or not putting faith in your spouse is a serious matter.

I find that old dictionaries are a cure for the post-modern jargon that muddles your thinking about affairs. When it comes to your marriage, you need clarity rather than confusion. You know when things don’t feel right, even if you don’t know the in vogue term for it.

The solution to losing faith in your spouse lies in restoring the trust. In my video, “How Can I Trust You Again?”, you’ll have the pathway to rebuilding trust cleared away. You can know what you specifically need more of in your marriage.

Best Regards,

Jeff
