Working on your relationship is exhausting

Some of the most exhausting times I’ve experienced came while helping couples through affair recovery. Although there have been rewarding times, the times when working through challenges wore me out in emotionally and physically.

The exhaustion comes from times of intense focus, high emotionality  and mental strain. When working with couples who aren’t good communicators, great effort is required in grasping what they are trying to convey.  For them, words don’t come easy.

When they’re emotionally drained, every conversation is a struggle. When someone is drained it’s contagious. They drain anyone attempting  connecting with them.

Since I’ve been doing this for over thirty years, I know the exhaustion is temporary. I’ve learned ways of working through those times. When going through such struggle, I sense the strain it puts of both of you.

These challenges came to mind when reading a post from a recent reader. He said, “Since she revealed the full extent of the situation, we’ve gotten back together and I think we’re very much back in love, but we’re both utterly exhausted. Counseling helps but it’s very hard. The situation has created some quite extensive damage to both of us.

Being utterly exhausted while working through affair recovery happens. Both of you run out of emotional fuel. This is a natural occurrence.

It’s during those times you need help. The two of you will still need to do the relationship work, yet it helps when you know what to do and hear some encouraging words along the way. Both of you need it, whether you realize it or not.

When you’re lost and hear nothing but conflict and discouragement, it wears you down. It can leave you feeling like giving up. At those points, quitting starts looking attractive.
