Romantic Songs don’t make for a healthy marriage

The idea of someone writing a song for you is a romantic notion. When that song ends up being a hit, the romance factor goes off the chart. When you consider that the love song is one of the greatest of the 20th century, you’d think you’re in heaven.

Although the romance factor goes off the chart under such circumstances, it doesn’t make a solid foundation for a marriage. That romantic notion may have even led to the destruction of marriage for a young British model.

The British model, Patti Boyd has had some memorable love songs of the 20th century written about her by some of the most notable musicians of her time. George Harrison and Eric Clapton both married her, yet neither were loyal to her despite those love songs.

Some of the songs written about her include Layla, Wonderful Tonight, Something and I Need You. They were wonderful songs, but it didn’t make for a wonderful marriage or one where spouses remained loyal to each other.

Frank Sinatra commented he considered the song “Something” the greatest love song of the past 50 years. So neither the woman who inspired it nor her husband who wrote it remained loyal to each other.

The money, fame, and romantic songs sold records, but it didn’t keep them from straying. No amount of songs, romance or money prevent affairs. It only set the stage for one.

Patti Boyd’s story is an example of how love songs may not create a happy marriage, no matter how romantic they are. The same thing can be said for any relationship, whether it be friends or family members. Romance isn’t enough to sustain relationships, but mutual respect and trust are essential.

Your spouse may not have written songs to you, but the fidelity you do have may make your marriage worth saving. Your spouse may have strayed, but their heart may have stayed with you.

When couples are hurting, they don’t always find the best ways of dealing with it. They may say all the right things or even write a song, but that doesn’t mean that their heart is with you.

Your marriage may very well be worth the effort. The two of you can work through what happened if that’s what you want.
