Workplace affairs

Although common sense dictates that it is foolish to mix sex and work, many people continue making that mistake. Workplace affairs have their own hidden dangers. When sex and the workplace are mixed, there are often risks to job and possibly career. These risks are added to the already risky behavior associated with affairs, including sexually transmitted diseases and emotional engagement.

I have seen three types of workplace affairs. Sexual addictions, peer-to-peer relations and boss-employee relations. Each has their own hidden dangers. In the case of sexual addiction, the addict allows their sexual behavior to enter the workplace.  The addiction may start with bringing in pornography or sexual crudeness, but escalates to anonymous casual sexual encounters. Sexual addicts often use breaks and lunch hours to engage in their addictions. In such cases, the addictive compulsion drives their behaviors. In such cases, those involved become sexual playthings.

A second type is peer-to-peer relations. In such encounters, as with many affairs, there are increasing demands for more time, more sex and more commitment. Such relationships often cloud peoples decision making and choices. Although these relations may begin off premises, they have a way of spinning out of control and eventually affecting the workplace.

The third type, which is boss-employee, like many affair situations where there is a power difference between participants often begins with admiration. The admiration is confused with attention and soon become sexualized. When the admiration is sexualized, the relationship changes. In some cases, the employee seduces the boss, in others, the boss exploits the employee. In either situation, both parties are at risk for exploitation in the relationship. Such relationships put both parties at risk for legal actions that may occur later. The power of sexual relations often cloud decision making.

Whatever type of affair, the potential risks and dangers associated with workplace affairs is significant.
