Is facebook the problem or a symptom?

I came across another article on the dangers of facebook, old flames and infidelity. This one was in Pursuit magazine. The article is worth taking note of since it cites the statistics of this occurring. One is that in England, the divorce lawyers are finding that 20% of those seeking their services identified facebook as the reason. There are other statistics cited as well from the legal profession. It seems that what the counselors sounded the alarm about is now being seen by the legal profession.

There is no doubt that facebook is a powerful tool, for either destructive purposes or constructive ones. Facebook also allows you to connect with old friends and develop support networks to help in dealing with challenges. Like gasoline, it can start up old flames or power business and other purposes. The danger arises when cheaters use social network tools life facebook for immoral purposes. The tool is a tool. It is how you use that tool that makes all the difference.

Facebook is not a substitute for human contact. You need people. You need support. You need to be talking with your spouse. Not talking will lead to problems either now or in the future. Facebook in not your problem, it is a symptom that you need real human contact.

  1. My husband is one that doesn’t like to be connected 24/7. So he has never used Facebook. It’s a good thing since the OW is on Facebook. But he is on other social networks and has several email accounts, which he used with the OW while involved in their affair.
They were high school sweethearts. The way they reconnected was through an email list circulated by their alumni association. So while it wasn’t FB, it was the internet. The internet makes everything seem private and secret, so people are more willing to try things that they would not if they were out in the open.
I agree that the internet and social networks are not the cause of infidelity, but as powerful communications tools, they make it easy to connect secretly to anyone or anything. It would be nice if it weren’t so private, but then we would be intefering with people’s rights.
