Father’s Day and Commitments

Father’s Day is coming up. If you know who your father is and have a good relationship with him, consider yourself doubly-blessed. Although it should be a time of honoring fathers and fathers fulfilling their commitment to their wives and children, in many cases, it is not. Some fathers view their duties as done after siring children and paying for their activities. There is more to fathering than that. That kind of thinking is so close to infidelity thinking it is scary.

Relationships involve commitment. The sad fact that many fathers show only little more commitment to their families than a lover does in an affair is troubling. When your commitment to your family is little more than a one-night stand lover would bring, you have bigger problems than just affairs.

The day also brings an openness and opportunity to recommit to your family. If you have messed up, do better. If you are working on healing your family after an affair, make a stronger commitment to do so. I was struck in looking at father’s day cards how many of them made reference to father’s standing firm. Perhaps you as a father could use the day to stand firmer with your family and their needs.

Best Regards and Wishing you a happy father’s day
