I often hear the phrase “prayer changes things.” I firmly believe that prayer does change things. I’ve seen how prayer changes people and situations.
It’s so powerful and essential, I don’t know how anyone, including you can make it through recovery from an affair without it.
Although prayer changes things, when it comes to affair recovery, prayer isn’t enough. Just praying for there to be changes without taking action accomplishes little.
In fact, praying alone can turn into a mindless and emotion-less ritual if that is all you do. It amounts to just wishing and hoping alone.
The first big mistake with prayer is trusting in prayer alone. Prayer needs accompaniment with action and change.
Genuine prayer changes your attitude and perspective. This is a good place to start.
Changes in heart need changes in action as well. Good vibes and intentions need substance to go with them.
Another mistake is praying without faith. There are times in recovery where you need faith in addition to praying. Praying leads you taking leaps of faith. In fact, taking such leaps without prayer is dangerous, if not foolish.
Praying requires you have faith that things can change. Faith is a prerequisite for praying for your marriage. This poses some challenges, since faith often requires some confidence which you are fresh out of.
Praying also brings connection. Prayer means at some level. you start leaving your isolation and making connection.
Thirdly, I find that many of you either don’t know how to pray or don’t know what to pray for when it comes to recovery. Sure, you remember some childhood prayers, but with what you are facing, you need grown up, heart-felt, spirit moving, adult praying.
You may even have to give yourself permission to ask for what you need or admit you need help. Some struggle with even admitting having needs or asking for help.
