One of the many concerns I hear from couples going through affair recovery is dealing with seeing the AP in public. Both the betrayed and the cheater experience anxiety at encountering the AP in public.
The confidence you once had in public is no longer there. It was taken from you.
The anxiety of possibly encountering them leaves you feeling on edge when going shopping, to the grocery store, restaurant, church or even the gas station. Going out into any public venue carries risks.
The anxiety leaves you examining each person coming in as the AP. This applies to situations where you know who they are, but even more when you don’t know who they are.
You not only examine each person, you look for non-verbal signals and looks that you consider troubling. It keeps you in a constant state of dis-ease. You’re unable to relax anywhere you and your spouse go.
Each waiter or waitress are now viewed with suspicion. You wonder if there is even more than one AP.
Your mind plays out what you will say or do in the event you do encounter them. The possibility of meeting them leaves you obsessing about the situation.
The whole situation stirred up such deep emotions inside you that even the very sight of the AP can trigger powerful emotions. Your mind says “It’s over“, but your body tells you otherwise.
This is where you need a solid affair relapse prevention plan. The plan isn’t just about the cheater, its about you as well. Knowing what the high risk situations are along with triggers are a start.
Having a plan for dealing with each of those situations helps you regain confidence. When you have a plan, it decreases the possibility of you being surprised. In my video on “Overcoming Affair Relapse“, I deal with these areas.
Knowing who to call in what situations can make the difference between you thriving or falling apart when you encounter the AP. You don’t have to continue living in fear. You can instead take the initial step and start preparing for that eventuality now.
