Masks and Trust

In the midst of the COVID surge back in 2020, I boldly predicted that the widespread wearing of masks would lead to a decline in trust. Many readers disagreed vehemently. But now, as time has passed, headlines are emerging that support my theory. The CDC’s latest blunder is being attributed to a lack of trust, not just masks alone. And even a study at UNC reveals that masks can affect a patient’s ability to trust their surgeon.

The evidence is starting to stack up – masks do impact trust. But what makes this issue even more complex if you remember was the ever-changing guidelines surrounding mask usage. One minute, experts say masks are essential, then they say they’re not, only to claim that wearing two masks is now necessary. This constant flux creates confusion and further compounds the issue of trust.

So now, the question becomes: just how big of an issue will trust become, and how long will it last?

In a similar vein, let’s consider the impact of constantly changing relationship rules on trust. When your spouse’s behavior is inconsistent and the rules keep shifting, it damages your ability to trust them. Consistency is essential for trust to flourish. You want someone you can rely on, not someone who constantly alters the dynamics of your relationship. Changes in communication patterns, conflict resolution, and handling of arguments only add to the confusion and undermine trust.

And just like masks, keeping secrets or hiding true intentions also erodes trust. There’s something about seeing a person’s full face and making eye contact that conveys honesty – a crucial component of trust. When faces are hidden, it becomes harder to trust. It’s a basic principle of human communication – masks are associated with secrecy and concealment, giving the impression that those who wear them are somehow engaging in shameful or deceitful actions.
