The Sexual Addiction Connection

Are you curious about the link between sexual addiction and swinging? The answers may surprise you.

Within the swinger community, many individuals see their lifestyle as healthy, normal, and liberating. But just like alcohol abusers who justify their behavior, those caught up in extreme or addictive behaviors often have a distorted perception. It’s a telltale trait of addiction – the ability to put blinders on the dangers that lie ahead. With their blinders on, they deny and block out any information that contradicts what they are thinking and doing. They don’t want to see the truth.

As an addiction counselor, I’ve been influenced by the renowned expert Patrick Carnes, who has spent decades studying sexual addictions. From that perspective, swinging undoubtedly falls on the continuum of sexual addiction.

However, it’s important to note that not all swingers are sexual addicts. The nature of swinging allows for a variety of experiences, and not everyone who engages in the lifestyle has an underlying addiction. That being said, there are individuals who use swinging as a way to hide their sexual addictions, utilizing the secretive networks within the community to feed their cravings without scrutiny. They feel entitled to the lifestyle they are involved in, and eschew being a one-woman man, or one-man woman. In many ways, they view themselves as ‘enlightened’ and better than those who lead one-man, one-woman marriages.

Some swingers even go as far as treating their partners as commodities, advertising themselves or their spouses like items at a garage sale. They may also offer movies or photographs as part of their enticement. This behavior, which amounts to human trafficking to an outsider, sheds light on just how deeply entrenched some individuals have become in this lifestyle.

The truth is, the swinger lifestyle can provide a cover for a sexual addict, tipping a once functional marriage into dysfunction. If you suspect that your relationship has taken a dark turn due to secret activities and commercialization, it’s time to question whether a sexual addiction is at play.
