Myths of Infidelity

Like many areas of our lives, there are many myths. The myths often keep people locked into their suffering, and prevent them from getting the help they need. Some of the common myths regarding affairs are:

1. Everyone is faithful. (Sometimes this gets taken even further by saying “All Christians are faithful” or “All Jews are faithful” or “All Mormons are faithful”).

2. Affairs happen because people are unhappy with their marriages.

3. Affairs are all about sex and not getting enough at home.

4. Divorce always follows infidelity.

5. Affairs are always the fault of the infidel.

6. When a person is in love, they are justified in having the affair.

7. Some things, like affairs need to be kept quiet.

8. It’s the 21st century and everyone is having affairs.

9. What they don’t know won’t hurt them.

Each of these myths are poisonous to a marriage. If you find yourself thinking or saying these things, you may want to seek out some professional help in dealing with your situation.
