Lessons on infidelity from the Choctaw

There is an old Choctaw Indian saying that “White man build house on hill; have to carry water to it. Indian build house near spring—save work.”

When I came across this, I recognized that cheaters are often like the man who builds his house son the hill, making more work and trouble for himself, rather than working through the problems with his spouse. Cheaters often bring more conflict, guilt, lies, betrayal and heartache on themselves than they would have had if they had instead worked through the marital issues in the first place.

Yes, it requires effort to work through marital issues. It often requires less work to address the issues with your spouse than it does to deal with infidelity and the many problems it brings with it. With infidelity, you double the family dynamics while cutting off support from your spouse.

Rather than create more grief and heartache, start with improving the relationships you already have. If your relationships are not healthy, it is not likely that your new one will be any healthier.

PS-By the way, the Choctaw tribe did not have many incidents of infidelity.
