Victimless crime? Think Again!

If you are a cheater, you may think that an affair is a ‘victimless crime’, that it is something between ‘consenting adults’ and no crime at all. In some communities it is against the law, in most communities it is immoral. You may try to justify it and say if something is immoral, it does not make it illegal. True, it does not make it illegal although it is not without consequences. Affairs always have consequences. The laws may change, but that does not change consequences or lessen the pain.

It is ironic that centuries past, under the rule of Charlemagne, that adultery had more serious consequences than did murder. Adultery was considered a capitol offense, while murder was viewed as more of a misdemeanor level of offense. Times have definitely changed since Charlemagne, but human nature has not. Affairs hurt everyone they touch, directly or indirectly. They hurt your children, your parents, your grandchildren.

The consequences are emotional, relational, spiritual and psychological. The scars of rejection, lies, betrayal and deception are often long lasting. Your so called ‘consenting adults’ excuse ignores the impact of your choices. Oftentimes excuses are ways of mentally fooling and deceiving yourself.

Those who have been hurt by affairs often bruise easily. They know pain and are quite sensitive to any kind of discomfort. No offense taken, consider yourself forgiven. I recognize such things as an occupational hazard.
