The Challenges in the New Military

One of the consequences of the sexual revolution is that the roles of men and woman have changed. With the changes in the role of men and women have come changes in society as well. One of those changes that has impacted many marriages is having men and women serve together in the military. With men and women serving together, there are increased temptations to cheat while serving, there are also unnatural pressures on the marriage and family structure at home. Having a spouse in the military has always been a challenge. The challenge is intensified with the current dynamics.

Whether or not you believe that men and women should serve together in the military, the reality is that you have to deal with it and the challenges that puts on your marriage.

Even though affairs in the military are ‘officially’ discouraged, the problem continues. Not only is the risk of affairs higher, so is the risk of rape, both stateside and overseas. When in combat, some people believe that they make their own rules and are used to ‘unleashing’ themselves. This works great in combat situations, yet having that mindset in a temptation scenario is like and IED exploding under your marriage. When affairs do happen, there are often many factors that contributed to it. Affairs in the military are not as simple as civilian affairs. They happen in a different context, with the persons having a different mindset, and often in a different country. When you daily life is ‘on the line’, you often look at things differently. That different look includes how you see affairs, other members of the opposite sex and life itself.

You can not apply routine rules to many military affair situations. Yes, the temptations are like yours, yet the pressures are radically different. These situations have to be handled honestly and in a straight forward method.
