Pain as Motivation

I hate pain. I also know that pain has often motivated me to take action. The discomfort of pain will provide you with a reason to take action. You may think that given enough time, the pain will go away. When it comes to relationships, that kind of thinking creates problems. The pain often gets worse as time goes on and problems are not dealt with. Time does help in terms of providing distance from the painful stimulus, but it does not fix anything. Those unresolved issues and hurts do not magically just go away. You will have to face and address the unresolved issues. Although you will not be able to fix all the issues, you will need to address them. In fact the majority of the issues you will have to face, you will not be able to fix. Although you can not ‘fix’ them, your pain will remind you that you need to face them. Since facing them is half the battle, it often goes a long way toward improving yourself. You will often have to start with you and your attitude. This includes your attitude toward the pain as well. You can complain about it, preach about it, medicate it, or write about it. Each of these may gain you some distance, yet they are no substitute for dealing with the pain.
