Should cheating boyfriends or girlfriends be Forgiven?

Although my focus typically lies withing marriage, one of you readers asked whether a cheating boyfriend or girlfriend should be forgiven. When you’re dealing with a marriage, you’re supposed to have a committed relationship and within that relationship, the dynamics are different than in a dating relationship.

Since the dynamics are different, the answer is different. Should the cheating be forgiven? If you are dating, the answer is “No“.

When the person you’re dating cheats on you when the commitment is weak, if at all, you have problems. Since you are not bound by promises, vows or commitment, the best solution is to end the relationship.

If you want to emotionally let go of the hurt, you may choose to forgive them. It’ll help you feel better. It’ll help you heal from the hurt.

Even if you choose to forgive them, the relationship in terms of the trust, security and stability is broken beyond repair. The damage only increases the longer you stay in the relationship.

In all likelihood, the relationship won’t improve. Despite all the promises they make to you and all the tears shed, cheating on you at this point is a flashing red warning light that scream ‘DANGER! DANGER!“.

When cheating happens in the dating relationship, if  starts a vicious cycle of breaking up and getting back together repeatedly. This cycle is often filled with drama.

Although it’s exciting and romantic at times, it makes for a very unstable relationship.  The sex may be amazing, but the price tag is more than you bargained for. Staying in such a relationship is asking for trouble, no matter how cute, attractive, apologetic, sincere or rich the cheater is.

The cycles of separation and rejoining will not get any better when you get married.

The wonderful thing about dating is that you can end the relationship much easier than dissolving a marriage. When you end the relationship now, the damage is less devastating than when it happens in a marriage.
