The consequences of going through your spouse’s phone

Going through your spouse’s phone is a sure way of triggering trust reactions. Phones are no longer ‘just phones’.

Today’s phones are black book, wallet, social media, camera, diary, GPS tracking and personal computer all rolled into one package. When you go through your spouse’s phone, it’s akin to searching through each of these areas of their lives at one time.

Searching through their phone is now something you do at your own peril. There’s no warning sign popping up alerting you to the dangers ahead. It’s even more dangerous when you attempt downloading a secret app into their phone.

With all their personal information located in one device, it’s no wonder that your spouse takes going through it personally. They or you may have nothing to hide.

Although both your lives are supposed to be open books, going through phones is viewed as intrusive. Whether your motives were innocent or not, searching phones are seen as encroaching.

That means that ”just checking” their phone has serious consequences. If they’ve been cheating, your gamble may pay off, if they’re not, your checking their phone contributes to creating an environment hostile to trust.

Although the cellphone is the #1 way that cheaters are caught, you still have to ask yourself “Am I willing to damage the trust in my marriage based on a ‘hunch?’

When you stumble across something on your spouse’s phone, you also have to consider what you actually ‘know’. Since much of the information contains only portions of conversations and interactions, you need to consider if you are seeing the ‘full’ picture of what is going on.

When you have only 1/2 of the conversations, you only have some data points. You don’t have the context, the other portions of the conversation or the background.

There are times that the other half, background and context change the whole meaning of what you may have found.

Are there other meanings behind what you found that would change things?

These are items that you have to consider BEFORE you go through their phone.

The phone is no longer ‘just a phone’.
