How should you react when the cheater tells you that they were ‘brainwashed’ into having their affair? “Brainwashed!?!” you may exclaim and question at the same time.
Cheaters are known for spewing out lame excuses for what they did. They are good at avoiding responsibilities, and it may sound like more of the same.
Although you may view their excuse as preposterous, there is part of you that wonders if it is possible.
When you have government organizations such as DARPA that devote resources and research toward psychological warfare and mind control, it has been shown that brainwashing is possible.
Then there are the numerous cults who act like mind-numbed automatons, who merely carry out programming. On top of that there are various methods used in business like group think, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), hypnotic speech and other tools.
When there are many methods and techniques out there, it tells you that ‘brainwashing’ is entirely possible. I recall years ago coming across NLP books for the lay public for use in relationships. There are plenty of desperate people out there who are not beyond using such techniques to attain companionship.
So, brainwashing is possible. Then you have to sort out whether or not your cheater was actually the victim of some mind control technique or they are trying to weasel their way out of responsibility.
Sorting that out whether or not you’re truly dealing with brainwashing requires effort. You’ll have to recall how their functioning was prior to you finding out about the affair.
Did they seem to be themselves?
Did they seem to be out of it?
What kind of mental and emotional changes did you see?
How was the quality and speed of their mental functioning?
The answers to these questions will help determine what you were dealing with.
