What a survey taught me about affairs in the ministry

The questions they ask you on surveys often reveal a great deal. The items that they ask you give you indications of what they consider important. The way the questions are worded often reveal the bias or spin the survey makers are looking for.

In a recent survey I saw for a highly placed ministry position in a major denomination, I was surprised at what they asked. Not a word about chastity or being faithful to your spouse were mentioned at all. There was one reference to Christianity, and the rest of the questions was a laundry list of social and communication skills.

The survey wanted to know how important each of these areas were in consideration of candidates for the high ranking position.

I thought to myself “It is no wonder there are so many affairs in the ministry.” When leaders are selected more on their social and political skills rather than their morals, values or commitment to marriage, you  are asking for trouble. When social skills are deemed more important than morals, then you have car salesmen in your pulpits and seminaries who are more than willing to turn a blind eye to infidelity if it gets them more money and keeps the peace in the organization.

The values of position candidates reveal what is important to the organization. The organization is often a reflection of the values of the people who make it up. When social skills and smooth tongued politics are priorities, it is a recipe for affairs. Just look at political leaders or popular Hollywood actors or pop culture celebrities for examples. Many cheaters and predators have well developed skills in those areas. Social skills without morals are often asking for trouble.

I often say that “You  find what you are looking for”.

  1. How true. This is how the world operates and you have pointed out how carnal perspectives are being held above Gods Word with the resulting fleshly fruit
No good fruit comes from a bad tree
May the Lord draw people out of these snares as there is no nourishment in them
The believers whole love the Lord will go outside the camp
Ministry becomes big business when those who “go into the ministry” as a “career choice” and a man made hierarchy is set up
It is a twice dead tree
It brings about the tinkling cymbals of social gospel
It is a snare and a deception
Praise to God who will continue to work in any who will humble themselves and seek to follow Him in spirit and in truth!
