What happened to the playground?

One day, while walking my dogs, I stopped at a nearby elementary school. I took a moment and surveyed the grounds surrounding the school.

To my dismay, the school removed the playground equipment. In its place were fitness related items. I know fitness is good, yet play is essential as well. It saddened me that the ‘fun’ playground equipment was gone. The monkey bars, the slide, the jungle gym, the see-saws all gone.

Although the former playground now had fitness equipment, it occurred to me that the elementary children are not more fit these days for it. Something has been lost in removing the playground equipment.

Sure, the school had reduced the risk of kids being hurt, but they’ve also reduced them playing. They’ve removed fun from the school experience.

In the back of my mind, words from the Cat Steven song ‘Where do the children play?’ echoed in my head.

I know we’ve come a long way
We’re changing day to day
But tell me, where do the children play?”

The experience was a sober reminder of our times.

That playground episode came back to me as I considered its’ application to couples and their marriages. It struck me that no longer do elementary children lack a place to play, many couples have lost their ability to play as well. They’ve lost the sense of play, fun and enjoyment.

Marriages where you enjoy play with each other are more enjoyable. If you enjoy each other, it reduces the risk of wandering eyes. If the two of you enjoy each other, there’s no room for boredom.

Play brings a whole new appreciation of being alive and fun. It puts a spring in your step and smile on your face.

If your marriage needs a rejuvenation, it could really be about play missing from it. If this sounds like something your marriage would benefit from, then you’ll want to consider the “30 Days to a Healthy Marriage” product.

You can find it by clicking the link.

The 30 Days takes you through reminders that help restore communication, spontaneity and playfulness to your relationship.

Keeping It Real,

Jeff
