When your connections don’t come through for you

Yesterday, I shared with you one of the topics discussed with my son around the fire pit. During the winter, we have some thought provoking conversations around the fire pit. That night, there were many points made that started me thinking.

Besides the danger of facebook, we talked about the difference between the real social world versus the social media social world. In the world of counseling, the term ‘social atom’ is used in discussing a person’s social world.

You may have hundreds of connections on your social media network. The concern is how many of those connections come through when your world is shaken up by something like an affair.

They provide you with a place to vent, but how many will actually come through for you? How many will actually cry with you and listen to you without interrupting during your most vulnerable moments?

In answering these questions you start to see the difference between your social media network and how many friends you really have. This is a real concern these days when many of those who write to me are doing good if they can count the number of real friends they have on one hand.

I know with the COVID situation, I’ve seen how many friends have come through at times I needed them. It hurts thinking they care, yet when the going got tough, they didn’t come through. At that moment I realized that there’s a HUGE difference between connections and real friends.

I also realized that there’s a huge disconnect between the two worlds. You likely saw that as well when you discovered the affair.

When your social network isn’t there to help you, what do you do? This is where the video “Getting Past the Affair Crisis” comes in. When your world starts crumbling, you need ways of pulling yourself together.

This video guides you through the challenges that come when an Affair hits and you suddenly realize your social network is not enough to get you through things.
