One of the times I feel like celebrating is when someone I’m working with ‘gets it‘. In that moment, the light goes off in their head and a look comes over their face.
That look lets me know that they connected the dots and gained insight. Although I can’t open bottles of champagne and toast their accomplishment, it doesn’t diminish what happened.
On reading a blog, I saw that a spouse ‘got it’. They also managed putting their insight in simple terms.
They said, “One can come up with hundreds of excuses for infidelity in marriage, but the person having an affair always has the choice to do or not to do.”
They cut through the excuses with what they realized. Rather than let depression, drug abuse, sexual addiction, early life incidents or moments of weakness blind them, they saw the plain and simple truth about choice.
At the moment you realize this, you see things in a different light. You realize that the affair was a series of choices, each a little worse than the previous one.
The excuses are given to take away the pain that comes with realizing you made a bad choice or to distract you. Even when they believe their excuse, a choice was made.
Choices led to the affair and choices will lead you out of the affair mess. The challenge is understanding what those choices are. At times, the choices aren’t so easily identified.
