Although on the surface, online porn appears to be the biggest threat to a marriage in terms of infidelity, the reality of looking at sheer numbers paints another picture. There are now more people involved with social media than there are looking at porn. Social media often makes affairs happen easier. They make hook ups with old flames or new ones easier to happen.
In terms of numbers, facebook is a larger potential threat to your marriage. In terms of the bigger monster to deal with, facebook (and other social media) is also the most dangerous animal. When you are dealing with an old flame, you have all those years of programming that the relationship with the old flame was involved in working against you. It is easier confronting the new programming of online porn than the years of programming involved with old flames that a cheater may encounter on facebook. Just in terms of the number and strength of neural circuits you are working against, the facebook threat is real and poses dangers to your marriage in terms of infidelity. Porn raises the specter of sexual addiction, but facebook raises the specter of love addiction and infidelity. Both are threats of monstrous size. The choice amounts to whether you would want to be attacked by a grizzly bear or a man-eating lion that has attacked you before and has a taste for human flesh. Both are dangerous and pose threats to your marriage.
You need to know the nature of the dangers and threats to your marriage. Each of these are threats, but of a different kind. Neither can be ignored. Facebook looks innocent. When the cheater mentions they want to ‘friend’ some old classmates sounds innocent, but it may be opening the door and placing bait for a monster you do not want to face again.
