Frogs in hot water

You have heard the analogy of boiling frogs by gradually turning up the heat of the water. This same strategy has been used in changing the moral climate of society. I recall that while growing up, when the movie Bob, Ted, Carol and Alice came out, there was shock and outrage. The theme of swinging which was portrayed in the movie was considered scandalous. In early films, not just swinging was scandalous, so were affairs. The lover was often portrayed as a low life and the affair as something bad. These days, movie and television portray affairs as a common occurrence. It is no longer the domain of the sleazy, but is now seen as being hip, since all the attractive people engage in either adultery or casual sexual relations.

You can debate whether the movies shape the morals of the culture or whether the movies are a mere reflection of the society all you want. What is clear is that society has become accepting of such behavior. You need to consider whether or not you have been drawn into that mindset. It is hard to keep your marriage special when you are surrounded with media that encourages affairs. It is akin to always inviting a neighbor over who is going to make advances on your spouse. You know they will do it, yet you invite them since they make you laugh and entertain you. The price for such entertainment may be more than you bargained for.

The simple solution is to quit inviting that neighbor over. Cut off your connection with them.
