Clever Devices, Clever Plans and Cheaters getting caught

The other day, I was talking with my favorite Bible answer man. I make it a point of hanging out with people smarter than me, so that I continue learning.

After our meal, the conversation drifted to understanding cheaters. he asked me how most unfaithful cheaters are discovered. Without much of a second thought, I told him “their smartphones”.

He gave me an insightful look, “Do you mean their cellular devices?” I said, “Yes, that’s an older name for them that’s seldom used, but that’s correct.”

Since he’s an older guy, I often have to explain modern technology to him. “I went on describing the many things a smartphone is capable of these days along with some of the latest apps cheaters use in hiding their activities.”

He said, “they sound pretty crafty to me.”

Puzzled, I asked “Why did you ask about other names for smartphones?”

He said, “Because Scripture says that they’ll get caught and their own device will be used. There’s a passage in Proverbs pointing that out”.

His response stunned me for a moment. “Really? I don’t recall seeing it”.

At that point, he shared the verse Proverbs 11:6b “But the faithless shall be trapped in their own crafty device.”

After gathering my wits, I said “Well, I’d never looked at it that way before! A smartphone is certainly a crafty device.”

It took me a while to digest all the implications of what he shared. Cheaters are often trapped by their own plans and devices. Their own cleverness works against them.

I suppose they believed their own lies and plans to the point where they tripped up. They treat their fantasies like they can actually happen.

I want to think that their own conscience sabotages their plans, but haven’t done the research on that area.  I know self-defeating behavior is a factor, although I’m not sure how big a role it plays.

If you’re a cheater or know a cheater who want to change, consider the video, “Help for the Cheater: Starting the Road to Recovery“.  It won’t trip them up, but it will help them turn their lives around.

Best Regards,

Jeff
