What the fall of Kevin Spacey can teach you

Earlier today my wife and I were discussing Kevin Spacey. He went from being an actor in demand riding the popularity of the series “House of  Cards” to where a new movie release only made $618 on its opening weekend.

Talk about extremes. You he went from having President Obama imitate him and being the darling of the popular press to being a pariah.

It’s not that his acting abilities suddenly changed. He still has the talent he had previously.

Kevin Spacey found out what it was like having his reputation ruined. In his case a ruined created drastic change.

Although House of Cards is fictional, it hit on some relational truths. In order to make the show believable, there are always some truths embedded.

Even amidst all the propaganda and programming, there are nuggets of truth.

The biggest truth from Spacey’s fall from grace is “There are consequences to sexual improprieties.” Sexual misconduct still brings down big stars even when you have good political connections.

Money and fame didn’t save him from consequences.

Although some latitude is given to actors, you can push it too far. Spacey experienced the law of cause and effect with his improprieties. You can’t outrun the law of cause and effect when it comes to consequences.

Cheaters could learn from Kevin Spacey. Fame or clout can protect for a while, but it eventually catches up. When it does catch up, the impact is big. In his case, who he slept with did catch up with him.

Consider his statement, “ I find it sad that by not talking about who I sleep with, that makes me mysterious. There was a time when I would have been called a gentleman.” He likely believed he’d never get caught.

Eventually cheaters do get caught. When your reputation is tarnished, it brings a fall with it. Fame didn’t save Kevin Spacey and it won’t protect you.

Eventually your secrets will be found out.

When you’re ready to make changes without a big splash, consider joining the support community at Restored Lifestyle. There you can share your issues with others and discuss your concerns all under an umbrella of privacy and anonymity.

I know from working with celebrities in the past that finding a place where no one knows who you are and can see you for you is important.

Keeping It Real,

Jeff
