As much as I hate to admit it, there are times in dealing with affairs that lawyers are a necessary evil. Although I say “I hate lawyers“, in reality what I hate is when litigious people use lawyers as weapons.
Truth be told, my brother in law is a lawyer and I love him, even though he is a lawyer.
When affairs happen, it signals that the marriage is in a dangerous place. It sounds the alarm that the relationship is on shaky ground, especially if there is a sexual addiction.
With sexual addictions, the affair signals that they are making choices endangering themselves and you. That danger exists in threats to your health and of bodily harm.
When your marriage is at that place, you need awareness of what your options are. You need knowledge of what the limits are. Although the phrase all is fair in love and war is used, the reality is that there are legal limitations to just about everything.
Charging blindly into relationship matters without knowing what the limits are is asking for trouble.
Knowing your legal options is VERY different than using litigation and threats of it like a hammer. Getting your way with litigation is where lawyers earn bad reputations. It’s also where grudges and resentments are made.
Knowing your legal options is especially important when the affair is part of a sexual addiction. The cheater needs help and you need to know what you can and can’t do in getting them help.
You also need protections when things are way out of control. Besides knowledge of legal options, you need an awareness of what you are up against when suspecting sexual addiction.
