When Hank Williams got it wrong

Hank Williams wrote a song about the importance of people minding their own business. In the song, he stated, ” Mind your own business, ‘Cause if you mind your business, then you won’t be mindin’ mine.”

The song concerns a woman on his personal phone line who listened in on fights he was having with his wife. In those days, many of the lines were ‘party’ lines where neighbors shared a line. At those times, you could pick up your phone and hear the neighbors conversation. If minding your own business concerned marital differences which are best dealt with behind closed doors, I support Hank.

Although with many aspects of life, minding your own business is a good thing. When it comes to affairs though, Hank Williams did it wrong. The irony is that although his song talks about minding his own business, in real life, he was caught up with an affair himself behind his wife’s back. The irony of being caught up in having an affair while telling the neighbor to mind their own business doesn’t escape me.

There’s an irony of how he sang about minding your own business, he didn’t abide by that way of living. In my own experience, some of those who demand their privacy or minding your own business the loudest are often meddling in someone else’s business when it comes to affairs.

I was reminded of this on reading a letter written by a woman whose husband was having an affair with one of her ‘best friends’.  No one in her social circle said anything to her claiming “it was none of our business”.

Truth be told, when affairs are occurring it’s a time you should tell their spouse about it. Let them determine what’s to be done.

Affairs with your best friend adds a brutal twist of the knife in your back to your betrayal. Having your friend act like they’re doing nothing wrong makes it even more tragic.

Having other friends hide it behind ‘it was none of our business’ amounts to a criminal conspiracy against you. That kind of betrayal is traumatic.

If you’ve had this kind of trauma happen, it’s not likely that those friends will be healthy choices for your support network. Instead, you need some serious help and direction.

In the downloadable video, “Getting Past the Affair Crisis”, you can know how to deal with the initial shock and betrayal. Rather than let your world crumble, take steps that help you get yourself together.

Don’t let the unhealthy mindset of ‘It’s none of my business” keep you from getting the help you need.

Keeping It Real,

Jeff
