Although the term infidelity is out of vogue, it expresses many of the issues regarding affairs. The term itself means one who is no longer loyal or an someone who committed an act of disloyalty. Affairs are definitely an act of misplaced loyalty. The loyalty of priority of the adulterer is on themselves and immediate gratification rather than the loyalty to their spouse or family. There are some adulterers who act with malice and intentionally inflict harm. Some just are not thinking when they do it. Some think that they can cheat the odds and not get caught. They are playing both sides fo the fence, thinking they can’t loose, when in reality they loose on both sides.
Infidelity expresses the lapse in loyalty associated with the adultery. Although some people justify their actions with logical or emotional reasons for their acts, they remain an act of disloyalty. It is not surprising that the term is also used in religious circles, since they also deal with people being disloyal or misplaced loyalties.
Infidel is a good term that describes some of the thinking behind the act of adultery.
