I was appalled in reading a recent interview where a filmmaker Faruq Masudi described polygamy as a ‘blessing’. He has not seen the damage inflicted on the children and families that such actions produce. The damage presents a wide spectrum of hurts, from homicidal rage, parental alienation, sibling rivalry, lies, sexual promiscuity, depression, obsessions, compulsions, sexual abuse, physical abuse, venereal diseases, alienation, depersonalization, and hatred that polygamy and such actions produce. These do not happen with every marriage, yet they are common when adulterous behavior such as polygamy occur. Although he describes polygamy as being ‘compatible’ with American values the reality is that the practice destroys families and damages the lives of all involved. It is destructive to the marriage and the relationships by making a mockery of commitment. The intimacy that could have existed between man and wife is destroyed. The ability of the children to trust the adulterous parent is demolished, and the sanctity of the family as a whole unit is distorted into an perverted shape. Many men have fantasies of being able to service two or more women and have little regard for the damage that such behavior produces in the lives of those it touches.
