Have you embraced Nermal?

Years ago, one of my sister’s friends had a cat named “Nermal”. I inquired as to why the name “Nermal”?. The friend replied, because he is not quite normal.

Over the years, the story has stayed with me. Many of you have expectations that your marriage needs to be ‘normal’ or that your family life needs to be ‘normal’. These expectations are dangerous, since there is NO normal (except on the washing machine). Each couple and family are unique. They have unique tastes, habits and routines. Expecting yours to be like others or the ones on television is unrealistic. You may have to embrace what it means to be “Nermal”. When you embrace nermal, you accept that you are not normal and never will be. You accept the quirks, habits and weirdness that is unique to your relationships. If you chase after normal you will not reach it. If you chase after Nermal, you can catch him. You can embrace Nermal, much like you can embrace and accept your spouse and your family.

  1. Good point.

I suspect your sister’s friend got the name from Garfield. There was annoying gray kitten who bothered Garfield. Nermal was loved by everyone for being cute and he knew it, so he held it over Garfield.
