Lessons from a bottle of Xtabentun in Mexico

Recently I found myself getting caught up in market bartering. Although I hadn’t intended for it to happen, it did. While walking through the market stalls in Progresso, Mexico, in a matter of moments I was caught up in a bartering episode with a vendor.

At times bartering can be fun. The prospect of obtaining a good deal through haggling is appealing.

Although there’s the excitement of getting a deal, such bartering teaches some real life lessons. In this case, I saw how easy it is getting sucked into situations. I should’ve walked away, but didn’t.

When you have an emotional attachment, you make yourself vulnerable. In my case, the vendor knew I wanted what he was selling.

He quickly exploited my attachment. He asked a price I wasn’t willing to pay, yet I wanted what I was emotionally attached to. I felt sucked into the situation. Inside I felt torn between the pull toward the desired object and repulsed by what I viewed as a ‘bad’ deal.

Although feeling torn, I continued haggling. For some reason, I couldn’t walk away.

The whole experience reminded me of how emotional attachments suck you into situations. You may even know the situation is bad, yet when you’re emotionally attached, you are drawn into it.

This is why emotional attachments to lovers or would be lovers are dangerous. When you feel drawn to them, you quit thinking straight. That emotional attachment messes you up.

There is a huge difference between getting sucked into an affair versus paying too much for a bottle of xtabentun. It’s more difficult extricating yourself from an affair.

If you or your spouse have been sucked into a situation you need help getting out of, the video, “Help for the Cheater: Starting the Road to Recovery” can give you what you need in your situation.

Best Regards,

Jeff
