You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille and other truths

Learning the stories behind popular songs often provides new insights. You gain a greater understanding of the song, the mood behind it and its hidden messages.

The truth has a way of showing through what people say, including song writers. Even when trying to hide or disguise the underlying feelings, the truth finds a way through at least in songs that touch your heart.

I was reminded of this creeping out of truth after recently hearing the song “Lucille” by Kenny Rogers.  I was in a piano bar, and the patrons added some new lines to the tune. After the phrase, “You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille..” they inserted several derogatory terms pointed at Lucille.

I actually thought the additional lines spiced up the song’s message. It certainly makes it quite a conversation item and captured the feelings toward Lucille in living color.

The feelings about affairs are raw, and the additional lines made it very real. It captured what people felt.

The truth be told, the song writer struggled with feelings of temptation along with fears of his wife leaving him when he wrote the song. His choice of words convey the struggle he faced.

Words along with how they’re expressed and the word choice reveal more than imagined. This is why it’s so important to actually hear what your spouse is telling you rather than reading into their statement what you think they’re telling you.

If you really listen to them, it’ll surprise you what actually comes through. What often happens is that the truth is right there, but overlooked.

If your spouse can’t talk to you without being interrupted or have messages read into what they are saying, the affair is only the tip of your problems.

Healing your marriage after an affair requires more than just forgiving and ‘having the big talk’. Learning better ways of talking with each other on a daily basis is an important and oft overlooked part of affair recovery.

This is why I included material on changing how the two of you talk with each other and about the affair in the download “Affair Recovery Workshop“.

Best Regards,

Jeff
