Back in April, my oldest son got married. It was a wonderful occasion filled with family members both old and new.
When families gather for events like weddings, there are plenty of opportunities for people watching. One form of people watching that I enjoy is children.
Their up-front honesty is refreshing. When they like or don’t like something, they let you know.
They also have ways of getting attention. In every wedding I’ve attended, it’s the children who often steal the show.
In some cases it’s what they say, in others, it’s how they do something. You can have the adults rehearse and be trained in what to do, but it’s not so easy with children.
Whether by raising their voice, crying or just looking around, they have ways of saying “Look at me!” Another way you can view it is “Pay attention to me!”
When children grow up, one thing that changes is how they get attention. When it comes to cheaters, they have new ways of getting your attention.
Although they have new ways of gaining attention, their motivation of some has changed little from childhood. Even their affair is a way of saying “Pay Attention to Me!”
They forget that you are their spouse and not their parent. They were so used to doing it with their parent, the pattern just continues.
When they have one of their “Pay Attention to Me!” moments, it puts you in a bind. You are left caught between acting like a parent or being their spouse.
There is no way of winning those kinds of situations. No matter which choice you make, it’s not going to be the right one, since they will change it on you.
Getting stuck in that choice leaves you feeling ‘bogged down’. When you are stuck like that, you need some extra help, like you’ll find with membership in the Restored Lifestyle community.
