Have you had one of those moments where you say “Nooo This is not happening again!” At that moment, you suddenly have your feet and emotions in multiple worlds.
In that instant, episodes from your past and the present situation become one. Instead of living in the present moment, your body and mind relive a past traumatic moment from your past while panicking about what’s happening now.
You can say you don’t believe in time travel, but at that moment, you returned to a time you thought was behind you. Although it originally happened months or years ago, try telling that to your body and emotions.
They’re stuck in a loop where they continue re-experiencing the pain, fears and anxieties that you endured the first time. They come back fresh. You relive what you assumed was past.
The very fact that you expressed reluctance to go through the experience should alert you to what’s actually going on. You’re reliving a traumatic event. Something about what happened in the present triggered reactions from the previous episode.
It could have been something as simple as your spouse running late, a look they gave you, a smell or the way they did something. Your mind recognized it and reacted. It took you back.
The problem is that this isn’t some summer re-run. This is your life and you are spending it reliving the most painful moments.
Although you feel helpless, there are things you can do that help get you out of this painful cycle. There are ways of putting what happened behind you.
