Tell me the judge

Learn to spot the signs of deception and lies. It’s crucial for navigating relationships and avoiding unnecessary conflicts. Don’t be fooled while others miss the tells.

In a legal battle with a family member, I was shocked to discover their lies about my wife and I. I initially dismissed their claims as frivolous. In fact, the family member had shopped many lawyers who also saw her claim as frivolous. One lawyer looked at it differently. He saw an opportunity for profit. There are times that all it takes is one lawyer who smells a profit.

During depositions, the family member’s lies were evident to me, but not to the lawyers. Truth became subjective, and I realized court is all about who tells the better story. This includes all the theatrics in making their story believable. From years of watching courtroom dramas, I thought that they were about finding the truth and justice. Boy, was I mistaken. That episode showed me a new reality.

I was reminded of a saying from a political figure who stated “Don’t tell me the case. Tell me the judge.” In my case, the judge was a golf buddy of the lawyer. The episode has a lesson for you as well.

Don’t expect cheaters to tell the truth in court. The priority is a believable narrative, not the search for truth. If they’ve cheated before, they’ll lie again.

These difficult questions arise in affair situations that end up in court. You’ll start to distrust everything and everyone. But there are steps you can take to learn to trust again.

Don’t let the lies destroy you. Trust yourself and those who deserve it. Take the first step towards living again.
