The torment of secrets

One of the problems with secrets is that they can become a prison for you. There are times that you will wish that you did not know what you know. When you learn a secret, how should you handle it? When you hear of an affair going on with a friend or family member, should you say something? At what point do the secrets become gossip? These are all questions you need to consider.

What has helped me is considering “If you are not part of the solution or directly connected to the situation, then it is probably none of your business”. This may sound harsh, but it has cut through some tough situations. There are times that spreading a secret, which may or may not be true, may end up doing more damage than keeping your mouth shut. The cheaters may be friends or relatives. Even in those situations, you will need to proceed with caution. Knowing what you know may be torment, yet it also gives you some insights as to what is actually happening. You can see when people are hurting, when they are lying and when they are avoiding issues. Learn from those situations rather than making them worse.
