The Power of Encouragement

The words we use in our dealings with others have power. Often you do not realize the power your words have. With a few simple words you can encourage or discourage those around you. When you are having a tough day, and are asked “How are you doing?” Although you may want to say that “Rotten. It is pretty clear to me that all (men/women) are good for nothing (explicatives).” That may be what you are thinking and feeling, yet it may come across like a shotgun blast and inflict damage on more people than you realize. A more honest response may be “Not real good. I am struggling with some hurts in my life and I just had a reminder of the pain”. This second response tells others how you feel, without the collateral damage of discouragement or disparaging words. When you attack all men or all women, that includes your children.

When you are in pain, it is hard to think of encouraging others. The truth is, your going through the pain means that you will know how to comfort someone better than those who have not been through your pain. The words “I know what you are going through” are powerful when they are spoken honestly and with sincerity. When you are in pain, you often feel alone. Having someone who has ‘been there’ who can understand often helps. They have not solved anything, only given you the reassurance that you are not alone.
