Selling what you don’t have

You may have heard the expression that “You can’t sell what you don’t have!”. In many cases, this saying is true, yet when it comes to affairs, all bets are off. With affairs, you are often either selling or buying what is not yours or something that you do not have. You often are buying and selling a fantasy or dream rather than something that is tangible. Sure the pain is tangible, but the affair is often constructed of hopes, dreams, lies and fantasies. The cheater is offering a relationship with the lover, that is not theirs to give, the lover is hoping for a future that they are not entitled to.

When it comes to affairs, you really are dealing with a virtual world. Major life decisions are often made based on the fantasies surrounding an affair. Rather than having a relationship based on substance, choices are made based on illusion. The cheater may be hoping for years of passion like the one they experienced with the lover, or a life with them that can never be.

So when it comes to selling what you don’t have, it can be done.  When a car salesman does it, we consider him a cheat, when a retailer does it, it is called misrepresentation, yet when a lover does it, rarely does the cheater see through it and react with any negativity.
