During my teenage years I had the experience of working on my father’s rent houses. Whenever renters left, you never knew what you’d find.
In most cases, there were only mild messes. When a home was occupied by the renters from hell, I needed a shovel to dig through the trashy mess they left behind. Typically, it was never one room, it was the whole house.
There was not only trash, there were typically damages to the home as well. Broken doors, damaged plumbing and holes in the walls.
There are times I still recall the smells and grimy feeling that came from my interaction with the renters from hell. They left trash, roaches, half-finished food and just about anything else a person would consider unclean.
When you are cleaning up after an affair, there are times you find yourself meeting the renters from hell.
With affairs, the renters from hell are the preoccupations in your mind, the emotional fears and the tormenting thoughts that haunt you. If your fortunate, the trashing of your life and heart is only temporary.
When in the middle of it time moves slow, agonizingly slow. During those times, you feel overwhelmed. Much like the sensation of walking into a house and needing a shovel to dig through the trash.
The lover came into your life and trashed your peace of mind, put holes in your marriage and left sloppy pieces of love behind. Now you face the daunting task of cleaning up.
The clean-up goes on long after the affair is over. Your spouse may come back, yet the clean-up is far from over.
