Physical Symptoms and Affairs

Man in pain

Some of you who recently discovered an affair are surprised by the experience. I’m not talking about the whole shock and surprise of the affair, but rather the symptoms that come with the discovery.

Some readers express surprise at the physical symptoms that come with affair discovery. Not only are they surprised, the cheater is also surprised by the effect their actions have on their spouse.

Part of me wants to say to the cheater “What did you expect?” Some cheaters expect there to be no physical symptoms of what they did. They assume that the affair only impacts them and the lover.

When your spouse who is such a vital part of your life cheats on you, there are effects in terms of symptoms. The severity of the symptoms varies in intensity and location.

As a counselor, the symptoms communicate to me important information about what issues the affair brings up along with how they are trying to come to grips with what happened.

Take for instance the nausea and vomiting reflex. These are among the common symptoms.

When they happen, the betrayed spouse’s body is communicating that they have taken something in that disagrees with them. They find the whole situation distasteful and disgusting.

Continued gastrointestinal issues occur as they start processing and coming to realize what happened. Your body is letting you know that there’s something toxic about what you discovered. It’s making you sick. Don’t be surprised if you struggle with the sensation of throwing up.

As the gastrointestinal issues continue, it interferes with your sleep and ability to take in the nutrients your body needs. Initially, your body will compensate, yet the longer it goes on, the greater the impact it has on your health. Your energy level, stamina and concentration will be impacted.

Sure, you can take pills and medications to help you cope, but that does little to restore the functioning of your body. The affair needs to be dealt with rather than bypassed. The pills and medications only address the symptoms, not the cause of your maladies.

In the video “Handling the Affair Crisis”, I share with you ways of handling the initial shock and early days surrounding affair discovery. How you handle things will make a difference in the long run for your health and your marriage.
