Pride

Pride has ruined many generals, politicians and couples. Oftentimes when there are troubles in a marriage, pride keeps the partners from seeking help. If they do seek help, by the time they do so, the damage is so extensive that the likelihood of reconciliation is small. If your marriage is experiencing problems, the time to act is now. By procrastinating out of pride, it only makes the problems worse. Since marriage difficulties are personal, we often take it personally when those issues are mentioned. It is pride that makes it difficult to address these issues. Couples often view seeking help as an admission that they are failures, that they are incompetent. Such statements are not the truth. The reality is that the couples have often done the best they know how, but they reach problems that they do not know how to navigate, since they have never faced them before. If you were sailing in deep waters or stormy conditions that you have never sailed in before, you would want to ask help from someone ‘experienced’ in those situations. Likewise when your marriage sails into those storms or deep waters, seek out those with experience in such matters. There is no substitute for experience. Seek out mental health professionals that have been in the business for a number of years and have been through some of this storms before. Pride is not worth losing a marriage over.
